Cigarette Fire Safety

The  Cigarette Fire Safety Standard Act became effective January 1, 2008. The law requires the Office of the State Fire Marshal to approve all markings on cigarette packaging sold within the state of Illinois. Please see the PART 400 Fire Safety Standards for Cigarettes Administrative Rules. See the required FS-1 Application below.

Cigarette manufacturers must also comply with Tobacco Products Manufacturers' Escrow Enforcement Act of 2003 (30 ILCS 167/1 et seq.) (Escrow Enforcement Act) which is enforced by the Office of the Attorney General.

The Fire Safe Cigarette (Reduced Ignition Propensity) directory is posted on the Attorney General Web Site. Brands that are listed on one of the two directories are certified and have complied with the requirements of the Tobacco Settlement and the Fire Safe Cigarette Act in order for Cigarettes to be sold in the state of Illinois.
