Youth Firesetting Intervention Program

About the Youth Firesetting Intervention Program

The Youth Firesetting Intervention Program is a statewide, standardized initiative designed to reduce the frequency and severity of youth firesetting behavior in Illinois. By working in partnership with the fire service, the program offers prevention education, early intervention, and referrals when necessary, providing support to both youth and their families.

At the core of the program is a centralized referral system that helps coordinate assessments and access to appropriate treatment resources. This collaborative approach addresses the underlying causes of youth firesetting behavior and mitigates its often devastating consequences.

Effective prevention begins with understanding. Educational efforts must be thoughtfully targeted, appropriately designed, and skillfully delivered to make a lasting impact. Recognizing what drives a youth’s behavior is key—because identifying the motivation behind youth firesetting is often the first step toward meaningful intervention and lasting change.
