Fire Prevention & Building Safety

The Division of Fire Prevention conducts inspections of buildings for compliance with NFPA 101, Life Safety Code (2015 edition). While concentrating efforts on state licensed day care, state-licensed group homes, and educational occupancies, OSFM fire prevention inspectors also help ensure safety through the initial inspection of aboveground tanks holding flammable and combustible liquids, liquefied petroleum gas installations, and hotel/motel occupancies.

The division is responsible for enforcing the Fire Equipment Distributor and Employee Regulation Act, Fire Sprinkler Contractor Licensing Act, and Pyrotechnic Operator and Distributor Licensing Act. The Division of Fire Prevention also inspects buildings and exhibits at all county fairs and the state fairs in Springfield and DuQuoin.
