Community Risk Reduction Week

Governor JB Pritzker has proclaimed Monday, January 19, 2026, through Sunday, January 25, 2026, as Community Risk Reduction (CRR) Week in Illinois. CRR is a data-driven process to identify and prioritize local risks, followed by the integrated and strategic investment of resources (emergency response and prevention) to reduce their occurrence and impact.

“This year’s focus on Emergency Response reinforces how proactive response strategies, education, and collaboration work together to reduce risk, save lives, and strengthen the safety of our communities,” said Illinois State Fire Marshal Michele Pankow. “I am proud that Illinois continues to shine on the national level as a leader in Community Risk Reduction. This success is driven by the strong partnerships we have built across the state and the ongoing collaborative efforts of fire departments, organizations, and community stakeholders.”

According to crrweek.org, every 23 seconds, a fire department in the United States responds to a fire somewhere in the nation. In 2024, 75% of all fire deaths occurred in the home and home fires were responsible for 8,920 civilian injures, with multibillion dollars in property damage. EMS calls continue to be around 70% of the reason for response from fire departments across Illinois, and nationally the fire service responds to a growing number of medical calls for service, surpassing 90% of total call volume in some communities.

“Community Risk Reduction is most effective when we work together. Across Illinois, we continue to build and strengthen partnerships with fire departments, community organizations, and public safety partners to expand CRR efforts statewide,” said Illinois CRR Coordinator Matt Perez. “By working together, we are creating safer, more resilient communities and strengthening our ability to reduce risk, save lives, and protect property.”

The goal of Community Risk Reduction is to reduce the occurrence and impact of emergency events for both community members and emergency responders through deliberate action in the areas of the five E’s of Education, Engineering, Enforcement, Emergency response, and Economic incentive.

The CRR process began in the state of Illinois in late 2019 and continues to grow through outreach efforts of the members of Illinois CRR. The mission of the taskforce is to promote the importance of risk reduction in Illinois by inspiring community ownership and providing coordinated resources.
